A beautiful tale of ghosts feeding on the loneliness of people in modern Japan leaving you wondering whether the unhealthy relationships with the dead are better or worse than the unhealthy relationships with the living. This one has also a very interesting film adaptation as The Discarnates, dir. by Nobuhiko Obayashi. Both are greatly recommended.

Bio-medical horror that actually comes with its own scientific bibliography and will make you dread your own mitochondria. Or at least check what mitochondria really are in case you have forgotten that. A great read. And then you can also check Masayuki Ochiai's film version which is consider a classic of J-horror.
